Song of the week: "Believer" by BACK-ON
On to the 2nd in my top 10 Jpop list, we have "Believer", one of the most underrated songs from one of the most underrated bands in today's mainstream Jpop. I can't find any stereo version of this song in youtube, and I'm so lazy to upload mine (lol it's in my HDD and my HDD is really far from me now and I'm currently enjoying my time on the couch) so please bear with it.
"Believer" is the B-side of "Chain", BACK-ON's major debut single in 2006 that was used as the first opening theme of Air Gear's anime.
Until now, I still think it should be a double A-side single, or even better, Believer should be used as Air Gear's OP and the single's A-side and instead of Chain!
Never mind the video tagline, Believer was never used as Air-Gear themesong.
It really is hard to make a decent review of a monaural song, especially a hidden gem like "Believer" which you must listen in high quality.
In their indies time, BACK-ON built the foundation of their career based on heavy rock while giving their own rap and synth touch. After going major in early 2006, they began to delve in mainstream music with softer sounding beats and more melodic guitars.
Believer is one of their earliest melodic compositions, and by god, it is that fucking good.
The guitar is pretty solid and cheerful from the beginning til the end.
And when Teeda jumps in with his first rap, it's just fucking golden. We have a constant sick beat and echo effects with such an addictive guitar riff. Don't get me started on the awesome second rap.
As for the lyrics, I'll give it 9 out of 10. They managed to produce an uplifting rock song with a rebellious lyrics that is more suitable for punk rock. Yes, we all understand that rebellious feeling of not wanting to be serious in life.
The rap is simply outstanding. It requires mad skillz to create and sing a tight rhyming rap in such a short passage. Also, the second rap requires precision and tempo management, you cannot anyhow freestyle there and outsync the other instruments.
Believer is that kind of song that can lighten you up in ANY situation, and it just perfectly fits in your mood.
It rightfully deserves the number two spot in my list.
